ESGE Congress in Florence 2009
Under the direction of Professor Luca Mencaglia, President of the Congress and chairman of the Organizing Committee and the close supervision of the ESGE Executive Board and the President, Professor Arnaud Wattiez, the 18th ESGE Annual Congress has been held in Florence, Italy, from October 28 to 31.
This event represented a truly international Meeting and was attended by more than 1600 gynaecologists, coming from all over the world, namely from Europe, North and South America, Africa, Asia and Oceania.

As it was stressed in the opening speeches by many outstanding personalities, the Scientific Program represented the state of the art in Gynaecological Endoscopy and was based on 269 Speakers, 67 Video presentations, 223 Posters and 151 Free Oral Communications. The participants were allowed to attend lectures, symposia, seminars, participation courses, hands-on courses and live surgeries. A new format of computerized poster presentation has been proposed for the first time in this meeting.

The most up-to-date endoscopical procedures have been proposed and presented in details and many presentations were dealing with the comparison between the traditional surgical approach and the newly proposed mininvasive endoscopic techniques. Moreover new perspectives and indications such as the discussed fertility preservation in oncological patients, have been discussed.

Two high-level participation courses preceded the Congress Program, one in Fribourg University (Switzerland) on unembalmed female cadavers, the second in Bella Scalo (Italy) on live animals. A complete day (Wednesday October 28, 2009) was dedicated to the “1st European Meeting of Ob/Gyn Residents and Junior Platform” focused on the residents' experiences in gynaecological surgery and to the Postgraduate Courses on the latest developments in seven different topics.

More than 70 manufacturers and companies generously agreed to sponsor the Meeting and to participate in a large exhibition of materials, that resulted of particular interest for the international audience: most of then already signed up their participation in the future ESGE events.
During the days of the Congress many pleasant social opportunities were offered, from a series of different tours through the art city of Florence and its beautiful surroundings, to the closing gala Dinner in the very elegant Villa Ragionieri, venue of the High Scool in Laparoscopy and Mininvasive Surgery of Florence.

We must mention here the perfect organization of the Meeting provided by the Promo Leader Service Group from Florence. It was decided therefore by the ESGE Council to use their competence in organizing the next three meetings, Barcelona 2010, London 2011 and Paris 2012.
Dr. Francisco Carmona and Dr. Juan Gilabert Aguilar are already at work to the next edition of a very successful Meeting; we wish him good luck, and to all the crowd of our affectionate audience: see you next year in Barcelona!!
