International Consensus Statement for recommended terminology describing hysteroscopic procedures

The structure and delivery of health care services vary across national health care systems, with differing credentialing requirements, funding, mechanisms for reimbursement and laws and regulations. These differences have hampered a clear understanding of how contemporary hysteroscopic services are currently being delivered globally and how best to do this.
Specifically, there is no consensus regarding the terminology used to describe the different hysteroscopic procedures, including the setting in which they are performed and the model of care (i.e. need for elective hospital admission and length of stay) of the patient undergoing hysteroscopic procedures. Terms such as “in-office”, “outpatient”, “ambulatory”, “day-case”, “in-patient”, “operating room” are used frequently interchangeably without standardised definition or common understanding.
Therefore, the American Association of Gynecologic Laparoscopists (AAGL), the European Society for Gynaecological Endoscopy (ESGE) and the Global Community of Hysteroscopy (GCH) formed an international working group of experts in hysteroscopy to develop a consensus statement of recommended terminology to use for describing different aspects of hysteroscopic procedures: (i) pain management, (ii) the setting where procedures are conducted, (iii) the model of care relating to the length of stay and need for admission, (iv) the type of procedure and (v) the approach to hysteroscopy.

This year, the Congress President, Professor Enrico Vizza, our Honorary Congress President Dr. Rudi Campo and ESGE President, Professor Giovanni Scambia and the Scientific Chairs, are proud to host you in Italy and in the beautiful and timeless city of Rome.
Due to the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic, we are designing the Congress with the aim to reach all participants, by hosting a hybrid event (onsite and virtual) over three days, Sunday 3rd to Tuesday 5th October 2021.
The theme of this Congress, ‘Per Aspera ad astra: through hardship reaching the stars’ is especially appropriate in these current times. Believing in something, defining ambitious projects and working hard to realise them, are all legitimate and important purposes (even opportune), because they build their foundations in hope. The hope that we have not lost in the difficult months we have faced and that guides us towards rebirth and innovations. This has been the driving force for ESGE scientific activities and adds new purpose for our patient-centred approach.
The Scientific Committee has developed a programme to offer the participants high-quality, evidence-based topics from the contemporary developments in various disciplines of Gynaecological Endoscopy.
Furthermore, live surgical sessions and GESEA certification exams will be among the innovations of the scientific programme, which aim to improve the necessary skills to ensure better outcomes of our patients.

This meeting will cover a range of theoretical topics on diagnostic and operative hysteroscopic surgery. Lectures include current and future developments in hysteroscopic procedures, new energy forms and innovative ambulatory surgery.
The role of hysteroscopy in the management of abnormal uterine bleeding and fertility is explored. There is an emphasis on undertaking hysteroscopic procedures in an outpatient setting with guidance on how to optimise and develop such services.

Panel of expert hysteroscopists will deliver short talks on relevant topics incorporating videos of surgical procedures. The lectures will address key topics such as innovation in ambulatory hysteroscopic surgery with guidance on how to provide and develop such services. Topics covered will include current and future developments in hysteroscopic procedures with emphasis on use of novel technologies and surgical tips and tricks. During this workshop there will be ample time for discussion and debate throughout the course of the meeting.
